Phone client interface partially hidden

The client installs and runs fine on my Motorola M1000 (Japanese version of the A1000) -- opens, connects, shows widgets I've added -- but it is not possible to select any of the widgets. A red border shows around the selected widget, but clicking on it either with the phone controls or tapping on it with the stylus does nothing. Also, the menus to the top of the screen don't display; a legend saying "Options" shows to the bottom left of the screeen but it cannot be selected or opened. Not sure what the problem would be. Have tried reinstalling the client but the same thing happens.
