Problem solved. It seems as if S60 has some problems with java apps which are installed on a card which is then removed. Since the card is removed, the app no longer shows up in the App Manager and can't be uninstalled. But it can't be reinstalled either.

In the end I forced my desktop PC's user-agent string to look like my phone, downloaded the .jad, then grabbed the .jar and bluetooth'd it to the phone.

After one install/uninstall cycle that way, I could then install normally from SMS link, etc.

This was my own mess, ultimately, however it would have saved me a lot of grief to just be able to download the signed .jar file for my phone directly from the web site. A special fall-back page with a drop-down for choosing phone, etc. would be appreciated.
