I am using widsets successfully in China - I'm in Beijing on the CMCC service. I use a Chinese Nokia 3250 but it's in English not Chinese.

I use a GPRS connection with these settings (this was on the phone already, so you should already have a connection like this) :

1) Connection name : "GPRS" (then some Chinese characters, but the name seems to be arbitrary)
2) Data bearer : "Packet Data"
3) Access point name : "cmnet"
4) Username : "None"
5) Prompt pasword : "no"
6) Password : "****" (there is no password)
7) Authentication : "Normal"
8) Homepage : ... arbitrary
Advanced settings :
9) Network type : IPv4
10) Phone IP address : "Automatic"
11) DNS address : "Automatic"
12) Proxy serv. address : "None"
13) Proxy port number : "0"
