Browsing 'authentication required' rss feeds

schngrg  2007/08/14 11:18 UTC

Some feeds are behind simple http authentication, it will be great if widsets can be used to read such feeds.

In particular, I want to use widsets to just get alerts to my gmail, it will be much more convenient than using pop3 in widsets or my E62's inbuilt mail application.

I would rather want to use widsets to handle the new-mail notifications, with gmail's mobile app for actually checking mail.

Feed URL:
http://mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom

Hi schngrg,

maybe I am not sure what you mean here, but let me confirm couple of things first.

We have a widget called " Email" which can be used for GMail for example. I have it running here and I also have different alert sounds to notify about new emails coming to my Inbox.

Is this what you are looking for? Via this widget, you can read and reply to your emails.

Cheers,

Taina

I have tried the email widget, its cool but not what I am looking for. I will try to explain...

If I use that widget, or my mobile's (nokia E62) inbuilt email client, then my mailbox is not in sync with my web-gmail account (the read/unread mails, sent mails etc...) I have to separately mark mails as 'read' in widsets, and mails I have read on mobile appear as unread in normal web interface.

Basically, its because I don't use "just my mobile" for email, I use it along with normal PC for use when I am not with my laptop.

Gmail has an excellent app for mobile devices which has gmail's web style interface which keeps my mailbox state in sync with my gmail account and also lets me search all old mails etc... (http://www.gmail.com/app). But this tool has a limitation, it *doesn't* runs in background or give alerts for new mail arrivals.

Now gmail also provides a atom feed (atom is like rss) (http://mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom) which I can subscribe to in any rss reader and get new-mail alerts (thats how gmail's notifier works on desktops).

As widsets is also a feed reader, I was hoping to subscribe to my gmail's feed in widsets to get new mail alerts and then if there is a mail of interest I can launch the gmail-app to respond to it etc...

But, gmail's feed needs a username/password (simple http authentication), and for this reason I can't use widsets for gmail alerts. If widset can support http authentication it will be really great.

Hello,

Http authentication does work with WidSets fetcher like this:

http://username:password@domain.tld/path

So in the google mail case it would be like this:

https://username:password@mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom

I'll get your mails without messing up the synchronization of other mail clients.
